Error 828 (ERROR_IDLE_TIMEOUT)

Message: The connection was terminated because of idle timeout.

This error occurs when the connection has been disconnected because the remote user's remote access session has been idle for a period of time greater than the idle timeout setting. This also results in the generation of event ROUTERLOG_CLIENT_AUTODISCONNECT. The timer can be configured on the client computer and on the server running NPS.

To configure remote connection timeout:
  1. On the client computer, for connections created using the Network Connections Wizard (NCW) and for Connection Manager (CM) profiles, the idle timeout timer can be found in the connection properties:

    • From Network Connections , right-click the RAS connection, and then select Properties .
    • Go to the Options tab.
    • For NCW connections, use the drop-down list to set the idle timeout timer. For CM profiles, use the drop-down list to set the idle timeout timer for the connection.

  2. On the server running NPS:

    • In NPS, right-click the network policy for the client computer, click Properties , and then click the Constraints tab.
    • Under Constraints , click Idle Timeout to display and configure the settings of the timer.
Error 829 (ERROR_LINK_FAILURE)

Message: The modem (or other connecting device) was disconnected due to link failure.

This error appears when the modem (in the case of dial-up or broadband connections) or tunnel (in the case of VPN connections) is disconnected due to a network failure or a failure in the physical link to the modem. The following are possible reasons for the failure.
  1. A problem in the network between the modem and the RAS server might have caused the basic dial-up or, in the case of a broadband connection, PPPoE connection, or VPN tunnel to fail.
  2. Check connectivity between the modem and the telephone/cable connection jack. If an external modem is being used, check the physical connectivity between the modem and the computer.
  3. In the case of VPN connections set up over a wireless network, problems in the wireless network might have caused the connection to fail. Check the status of the wireless connection in Network Connections folder. Some of the causes of problems in the wireless network are:

    • The wireless access point might have gone down due to loss of power or for other reasons.
    • The user's computer might be out of the operating range of the wireless network or the RF signal strength might be weak.

  4. The RAS server might have failed or restarted and closed the connection. Check the event logs on the RAS server.
Error 830 (ERROR_USER_LOGOFF)

Message: The connection was terminated because user logged off.

The RAS connection was terminated because the user logged off of the Windows session in which the connection was active. Log on and make the RAS connection again.

Error 831 (ERROR_FAST_USER_SWITCH)

The connection was terminated because user switch happened.

There are multiple login sessions on the user's computer. The user switched from a login session with an active RAS connection to another session. This resulted in the termination of the connection. Switch back to the original session and make the RAS connection again.

Error 832 (ERROR_HIBERNATION)

Message: The connection was terminated because of hibernation.

The user put the computer into hibernation mode while the RAS connection was active. This resulted in the termination of the connection. The user lost connectivity to the network upon recovery from hibernation. Make the RAS connection again.

Error 833 (ERROR_SYSTEM_SUSPENDED)

Message: The connection was terminated because the system got suspended.

The user's computer went into standby mode due to inactivity. This resulted in the termination of the connection. The user lost connectivity to the network. Make the connection again.

Error 834 (ERROR_RASMAN_SERVICE_STOPPED)

Message: The connection was terminated because Remote Access Connection manager stopped.

If the Remote Access Connection Manager service is not already running, start the service from the Services console. Right-click the service, and then select Start . Note that administrative credentials are required to start the service. The Remote Access Connection Manager service is also started automatically when a RAS connection is dialed.

The user stopped the Remote Access Connection Manager service. Check the status of the service in the Services console.

To access the Services console:
  1. Click Start , point to Administrative Tools , and then click Services .
  2. Check the Remote Access Connection Manager service. If the service status is stopped, right-click the service, point to All Tasks , and then click Start .
Verify

To verify that the remote access server can accept connections, establish a remote access connection from a client computer.

To create a VPN connection:
  1. Click Start , and then click Control Panel .
  2. Click Network and Internet , click Network and Sharing Center , and then click Set up a connection or network .
  3. Click Connect to a workplace , and then click Next .
  4. Complete the steps in the Connect to a Workplace wizard.
To connect to a remote access server:
  1. In Network and Sharing Center, click Manage network connections .
  2. Double-click the VPN connection, and then click Connect .
  3. Verify that the connection was established successfully.
