When attempting to set a default content access account to index content in a domain that has no trust relationship with the SharePoint Portal Server domain, the following error message is displayed:
The specified account information is incorrect or invalid. Confirm the correct account and password is being used.
The authentication process fails because the Windows NT LAN Manager (NTLM) does not recognize the default content access account credentials being used by the search gatherer component, because the account is in an untrusted domain.
Credentials must be supplied using either Basic Authentication or Pass-through Authentication. Basic Authentication sends credential information in an unencrypted format using a site path rule, while Pass-through utilizes NTLM.
To Configure Basic Authentication:
1. From the default web site – Click Site Settings – Search Settings – Indexed Content – Configure Search and Indexing.
2. Select Other Content Sources – Manage Content Sources.
3. From the menu – Select Edit.
4. Click Advanced – Exclude – Advanced Content.
5. Create a new rule or edit an existing rule under Specify Authentication.
6. Click Specify Crawling Account.
7. Clear the Do not allow Basic authentication check box.
To Configure Pass-through Authentication:
1. Create an account in the SharePoint domain using the same username and password as the account in the untrusted domain.
2. Set the new account in the SharePoint domain as the default content access account.
