DescriptionThe driver detected a controller error on \Device\Tape0
Event InformationAccording to News Group
Cause:
First, try to replace the tape and see if the error persists. If the error is still present, try to replace the tape drive. If replacing the tape drive still does not fix the problem, replace the controller.
--------------------------------------------------------
Possible Causes and Remedies:
1)If the error (Event ID: 11) is not found in the NT system event log then it may be simply that another application currently has control of the tape drive (possibly even another instance of NTBackup). This can be difficult to spot especially if the other application is not actively using the tape drive at the time. Use task manager to identify if any other applications are running that might have taken control of the tape drive. This can be difficult because database software (for example) may take control of the tape drive (for backups) but not show a separate or obvious process in task manager. Either wait for the other application to finish, close it or perhaps reboot the server (to be sure that any locking applications are closed down).
2)Tape device switched off. This is only likely if the tape drive is external. Check that it is powered on and that all the cables are connected.
3)Driver or firmware problem. Try shutting down (and powering off) the workstation. Then restart. I have observed this problem on systems that have been left running for long periods of time. Cycling the power often seems to cure the problem, which implies that it may be a driver, NT or firmware problem.
4)Loose cable. As a last resort check the cables to ensure that none have worked loose.

This problem may occur if the Veritas Backup Exec program is installed on your computer. A conflict between the Veritas tape device driver and the Routing and Remote Access service may prevent the service from starting. To resolve this problem, replace the Veritas tape device driver with an updated device driver. You can replace the Veritas device driver with an updated third-party driver or with the Windows standard tape device driver. To install an updated third-party driver, follow the instructions that the manufacturer provides. To install the Windows standard driver, follow these steps:
1. Open Control Panel, and then double-click System.
2. Click the Hardware tab.
3. Click Device Manager.
4. Expand Tape Drives.
5. Right-click the tape device, and then click Properties.
6. Click the Driver tab, and then click Update Driver. The Upgrade Device Driver wizard opens.
7. Click Next.
8. Click Display a list of the known drivers for this device so that I can choose a specific driver.
9. Click Show compatible hardware. The wizard will list one of the standard tape drive models that are compatible with your hardware.
10. Click the listed device, and then click Next two times.
11. Click Finish.
12. Restart your computer.
