DescriptionUpdate to catalog index failed. Reason: Operation is not supported for this type of object.
Event InformationCause :
This issue may occur if the CATALOG index BeTopCat.idx file is corrupted.
Resolution
To resolve this issue, do the following:
1. Quit VERITAS Backup Exec (tm)
2. Click Control Panel | Services, and stop all the Backup Exec services
3. Delete the BeTopCat.idx file located in the \BackupExec\NT\CATALOGS folder
4. Delete all the temporary files from the CATALOGS folder:
a. *.TMP
b. *.SM (temporary CATALOG files)
c. *.FDD (temporary CATALOG files)
d. QTC*.* (temporary CATALOG files)
5. Click Control Panel | Services, and restart all the Backup Exec services.
6. Start Backup Exec, and click the Restore Selections tab. A list of backup sets should now be available for restore.

Resolution:
1. Install latest Microsoft Data Access Component from
2. a. Exit the Backup Exec Program and stop the Backup Exec services.
b. Rename Program Files\VERITAS\Backup Exec\NT\Catalogs\BETOPCAT.IDX.
c. Delete all temporary files (*.TMP, *.SM, *.FDD, QTC*.*) in this directory.
d. Restart the Backup Exec services and launch the Backup Exec Program.
3. Right-click devices in Device tab, select Properties >Configuration, uncheck Enable device for Backup Exec. Right-click on the device again, select Delete.
4. Stop the Backup Exec for Windows NT program.
5. Recycle Backup Exec services.
6. Restart the Backup Exec for Windows NT program.
Note: Tape devices will reappear in Devices tab automatically; if not, run device configuration wizard.
