| Event Information | The MTA Stacks service may not start on computers that are running Microsoft
Exchange 2000 Server Service Pack 2 (SP2) or later. Microsoft Outlook clients
that connect to the Exchange 2000 server may have outgoing e-mail messages that
sit in the Outbox and cannot be sent. You may observe a series of events from
MSExchangeMTA in application event log. CAUSE: The problem typically occurs when the SMTP Protocol is corrupted or is missing. RESOLUTION: To resolve this problem, reinstall the SMTP Protocol on the computer that is running Exchange 2000. To do so, follow these steps. Remove the SMTP Protocol:. 1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel. 2. In Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs. 3. In the Add/Remove Programs dialog box, click Add/Remove Windows Components. 4. In the Add/Remove Windows Components dialog box, click Internet Information Services (IIS), and then click Details. 5. In the Internet Information Services (IIS) details box, click to clear the SMTP Service check box, and then click OK. 6. Click Next two times. 7. Click Finish. 8. Restart the computer that is running Exchange 2000. Install the SMTP Protocol:. Note Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps. 1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel. 2. In Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs. 3.
