Description | Product: Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003 - Update 'Office 2003 Patch: WINWORD 6502' could not be installed. Error code 1603. |
Event Information | According to Altiris: Cause: 1. The update was failing because, underneath (as per the log) an error was being returned wherein it (the update) required the location of SKU011.CAB, but it could not be found. This is usually caused by OEM versions of Office 2003 having been installed (installed with the computer by the manufacturer) 2. Because the update is being run from a batch file (as per Microsoft’s design), when the update eventually failed, the batch file would simply exit and pass back 0, signifying that, as far as it was concerned, the update had completed, when in fact the update failed with 1603, which means that an environmental condition prohibited the update from installing correctly. Resolution: Fortunately this kind of error/problem is a rare exception, and not the rule. The user actually had the MS Office 2003 CD and put it in the machine. The update (when enentually run again) found the SKU011.CAB file and installed the update. The next time the inventory rule ran it returned TRUE on the IsInstalled test and quit trying to apply the update. If there are many computer affected like this then it may be possible to remedy the condition by creating a Software Delivery task that will copy SKU011.CAB to the %SystemRoot% of all affected machines. |
