This is a known problem with the McAfee Virus Scan 8.0i software on server platforms. We have a support case raised with McAfee currently. If the error message is "Task Manager : Service Error : MID ConfigurationApplicator: Applying VirusScan settings failed. (0012)" the fix is to to remove the value of the CAP key in the registry. This is located at \\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\NetworkAssociates\TVD\VirusScanEnterprise\CurrentVersion\CAP\.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Error message: Password authentication failed - It is possible that the username and password are incorrect for the McAfee VirusScan 8 Console Scheduled task. Look in all its tasks for a Scheduler and alter its username and password to a valid account on that computer.

McAfee Solution ID kb39875 has information about this event. Go to the "McAfee Knowledge Search" page and search for the specified solution to read the article.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Go to “C:\Program Files\Network Associates\VirusScan\MID”; see if you have a “vsecfg.cab” file. Rename the file to “vsecfg.cab.old” and see if this fixes the problem.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In my case this error appeared after an upgrade of Windows 2000 server to Windows 2003 server. The solution was to remove VSE8i and install VSE7.1.
